The Interrupters: history and sound
The Interrupters: Pioneers in Modern Ska Punk Rock
Music has always had the power to define cultures, movements, and individuals. For decades, punk rock has been a potent political and artistic force worldwide, blending disillusionment with social and political issues with raw guitar riffs and driving beats. Recently, ska punk rock has made a resurgence as a seamless marriage of punk rock capabilities and the reggae Jamaican sound. And at the forefront of ska punk rock is The Interrupters.
The Interrupters have made ska punk rock their own and infuse it with a distinctly youthful, political, and energetic energy. The band comprises of Aimee Interrupter as lead vocals, Jesse Bivona on drums, Kevin Bivona on guitar, and Justin Bivona on bass. Their sophomore album, Fight the Good Fight, peaked at 7th on the Billboard Heatseekers Chart, and the band has gained a loyal fanbase that sings their songs with as much gusto as Aimee.
Their musicality is a product of their roots in Los Angeles, California, where they grew up during the 1990s ska punk rock movement. Their sound echoes some of their influences, such as Rancid, Operation Ivy, and the Specials. But make no mistake; their sound is distinct, and their approach is a combination of modern-day punk rock and ska punk rock.
Some of the band's best songs include Take Back The Power and She's Kerosene, both of which encapsulate the band's ethos of social and political commentary, layering over sharp guitars and catchy riffs. Gave You Everything is a more emotive and personal song about relationships and heartbreak, punctuated with Aimee's lively and iconic voice.
The Interrupters embody the rebellious spirit of punk rock while also advocating for positivity and sharing a message of optimism. Their music seeks to create a sense of community amongst their fans and spreads positive energy to those listening. The band's style and message resonate with those who yearn for a world of hope and justice.
Famous for their electric live performances, The Interrupters always put up an exhilarating show. They have toured with big names such as Green Day, Rancid, and Dropkick Murphys, and have played iconic festivals such as Coachella and Warped Tour. Their shows are often marked by mosh pits, endless crowds, and Aimee getting down on the floor to get more intimate with their fans.
Critics have been enthusiastic about the band as well, with Rolling Stone describing Fight the Good Fight as a love letter to punk-rock longevity and Billboard stating that The Interrupters represent everything that's laudable about the genre, setting a sterling example for up-and-coming musicians.
The Interrupters are undoubtedly one of the most notable ska punk rock bands in the industry today. With their politically charged lyrics, catchy riffs, and astounding live shows, they have quickly amassed a loyal following. The band's style is a modern twist on classic ska punk rock, and they are undoubtedly paving the way for a new generation of punk rock fans.
